San Miguel de Cozumel is the only city on the island municipality of Cozumel.
It is part of the Mexican state of Quintana Roo and is Quintana
Roo's fourth-largest community, behind Cancun, Chetumal (the capital) and
Playa Del Carmen.
San Miguel is virtually crime free, very safe and tourist friendly.
There are 2 cruise ports in town. One is the ferry terminal (Ferry
Pier) which supports 2 companies that provide service to and from Playa Del
Carmen.  The other is the one at Punta Langosta on the South edge of
downtown which is the newest cruise ship pier (1999).
There are two kinds of public transportation that service the downtown area --
and ONLY the downtown area. Both begin and end at Chedraui Plaza
which is located 1.5 blocks from Waterfront drive bewtween Xel-Ha and Calle
17 Sur.
City Buses: A city bus service runs seven routes around town.
Each bus has its scheduled stops written on its windshield.
All 7 routes begin and end at Chedraui Plaza. Stops are
marked on the windshield. Rates are about 7 pesos (55 cents) for
adults and 3 pesos (25 cents) for seniors, students, children under 3.
Collectivos: shared vans (combis) operated by the taxi union that
run along fixed routes with fixed stops, but only within the town of San
Miguel. Prices are by the ride, not by the stop or distance.
Non-scheduled stops are not allowed. Routes are marked on
the van's windshields. Rates are comparable to city buses.
Note that there are NO bus or shuttle services to hotels or beaches.
Tipping is not expected in Cozumel.
